Today I'm pleased to bring you an interview from a great artist from across the pond, here is the 7th installment of the CTU's interview series...

Presenting the CTU's Dirty Dozen featuring: Indescribble (Laura Bath)

1. What name do you go by and why?

I go by the name Indescribble.
When I started out I was working in several styles, doing illustration, art and graphic design. I enjoyed having that variety of projects. I wanted a name that reflected my diversity and didn't want to pigeon hole myself. I was working with a partner at the time and we ended up flicking through the dictionary till we came across indescribable and I remember thinking hang on that's perfect if you scribble out the 'a' you get indescribble. Independent, indescribable scribbles, and so it was...

2. Why did you get into custom toy making?

I'm not even sure how it happened, I was a big Tado, Jon Burgerman fan at Uni and got into the Pictoplasma books. They had pages of custom toys and I loved the idea of injecting a character and personality into inanimate things or making one from scratch. Eventually I got my hands on a Munny and really enjoyed it.

3. What influences / motivates your work the most?

I have a real duality to my work. I don't really consciously think about it when I'm producing it but its entirely influenced by mood, in hindsight. Half of it is full of happy masculine creatures having a laugh and giggle inspired by life and it's absurdities but are fantastical. Then the more melancholy reflective side of me comes out in the female form, more realistic and some times they meet and I guess that's just the balance of life.

4. What is your favorite platform to work with?

I can't profess to have worked on that many platforms yet. I'm still green when it comes to custom vinyl. I do prefer the bigger pieces to work on though. It suits my painting style better I'm used to painting in a fairly loose style. Shaky hands, bad eyesight and tiny brushes make smaller pieces a real challenge.

5. What tools of the trade do you use?

My eyes, hands and acrylic paints and the usual suspects of primers, Montana spray and humbrol varnish.

6. Do you have any formal arts training?

Yup. BA (HONs) illustration degree :)

7.What other artistic mediums do you dabble in?

I sketch a lot, paint on a variety of surfaces like skate decks, use a whole heap of Illustrator and a lil photoshop. make plush. all sorts, I like using different techniques.

8. Who are your favorite artists?

Wow, everyday I find more and more artists that blow my mind. There are so many talented people. I have to say a person that really inspires me is Audrey Kawasaki, I look at her work and get bowled over by her quality of line, it's so beautiful and delicate but massively powerful. literally awesome.

9.Who or what pieces do you collect?

I'm not a big collector as I've never had the funds to get hooked into it. I have a few pieces like a Treeson that I adore, some Bamboozoo, because you gotta big up the west-country peeps Peskimo <3, some Qees and that. I have no allegiance. I just get pieces I like when I can afford them or people kindly buy them for me.

10. What piece are you most proud of?

The 18" Knucklebear I did earlier this year ' We Will Carry Each Other' . I really feel I'd affirmed my style doing it. it was a lovely thing to let rip on something that big too. Kudos to Iksentrik for inviting me to participate in the 'Knuckle Sandwich' show it was a total pleasure.

11.Do you have any shows or exhibitions in the works?

July 10th, Iksentrik, Bath, England ... First solo show- 'Ladies and Gentlecreatures' .Exciting and nerve-racking ...maybe I should have called it that instead? ha ha.

12. Do you take commissions?

Yeah, I always like a challenge - Bigger the better :)

The Custom Toy Union would like to thank indescribble for her time and for sharing her work with us.

I love your work! So clean and well thought out. There seems to be a story in your designs. Being a former skater boy myself, I would be thrilled to have one of those decks to hang on my wall.
