Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

Hey People. I seldom post in here, but I figured I'd throw myself to the wolves since I've been painting so much this week, and feedback is appreciated. Some of you guys may have seen my piece for the NYC (heart) QEE show a couple weeks back. This guy:

Well, I was SUPER psyched when he sold on the show's opening night ( :woot: ), and that motivated me to use the few 2.5 inch qees I had lying around to make some 'partner' pieces. These little guys wil be coming with me to Wondercon regardless of commentary (sold or not), but I'm working on nailing this style, and feedback could help for future pieces. They are mostly done with spray paint (a bit of modeling/sculpting first). What do you think:

I'm callling the guy in the middle a "Sluggy Qee" :D

Thanks argyleEyes. I understand where your coming from, but doing that would kind of make the whole stencil thing a moot point... I could jst use a brush for the whole thing then...

Seems the Danger room is seldon utilized... not feeling to 'in danger' around these parts...

haha, I'm not harsh enough anyway. *shrugs* I thought they looked cool and just had to throw something out there, Looking at them more I just really dig the overall shading and texture use.

Most of the responses to pieces are still "wow, that's great" or "nothing wrong here"

I'll try to write up a detailed critique later or tomorrow if you'd like.

It's all god fail. I don't need to be complemented - just figured if anyone had criticism, then I'd try to soak it in and consider it for future pieces. No need to compose a doctrine ;-)

i was on the Skull Brain board the other day and saw some serious badgering - that's also not cool... but, lie I said, telling it like it is and doing it constructively seems like a good idea.

Great texture, paint and idea. You certainly look like you executed your planned idea here and I like them. Honestly my favorite part is the Katakana on their belly :).

I'm not terribly familiar with qee toys, I'm assuming you used an epoxy to do the sculpting? Either way, i think the minimalist sculpting style compliments the broad range of textures in the piece. (this isn't to say the sculpted aspects are not well done, just that the platform is still well represented)

The spray patterns and scale stencils (fishnets?) remind me of writing and the inexorable race to "get up". I can almost smell a dark alley and feel my finger cramp up.

The hand painted portions are well executed and expressive. Their softer style is sharply contrasted by the stencils of script on the bellies. I especially like the beginnings of decay on the teeth and how the reflections in the eyes appear to be bubbles (hinting perhaps at their semi-aquatic origin?)

The set as a whole makes me wax political. I see the wide eyed slug in the center as an idealistic and somewhat out of touch politician or premier, flanked by the muscle that keeps him in office (sen. walker and the two fitzpatrick bros maybe :beatdeadhorse: ).

Overall, an evocative set with more under the surface than may meet the eye. Good execution of technique, awesome textures, and a cool theme.

Dude - Fail - thanks for the critique and the s-u-p-e-r thought out response to these pieces! I've been off-line for most of the past month, and this is my first time back on the CTU in a while, so this is a nice 'refresh button' to get myself back into the community. I think I'll quote you on my future header cards!!!

I'll stop there and get stop posting done - thanks again dude!
