Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

Just as a whole needs to be cleaned up from sculpt to paint. Sand sand and sand some more. The smoother the clay the better it will look. Good shade choice on the blue. He looks a bit like Ed Asner.

I think this is a step up from your last piece. Nice to see some improvement :D

I know there are some awesome sculptors on here, I'd suggest hitting up a few to see what they do to make their pieces so smooth.

Keep up the good work :D

I think you could have tightened up the paint job. I see a lot of blue on what should be the white hair/fur edges. I would advise next time that you paint the blue first and then paint the white hair/fur. Most of the times when I paint I have to repaint over mistakes like that.

I have a lot of the same criticisms you've already gotten here. Starting from the sculpt, I think the fur is okay, but it feels more sheepish than yeti to me. Total judgement call there, as your yeti isn't my yeti, and there's no "real" creature to base it on. The nose seems oversculpted to me, too detailed. Since you didn't also sculpt eyes and mouth, it feels out of place, too far to the realistic end of the spectrum. I'd suggest really just a basic shape that suggests a nose in this case. And then I'd sand that thing super-smooth. The Marshall is a very smooth, clean figure, so it's going to be very unforgiving in that regard.

Paintwise, I'd have skipped the brush entirely for the blue, and just sprayed the whole thing with spraypaint. You could even use a light blue spray over the whole thing first, and then use a slightly darker blue and spray it again so that you're spraying from the bottom of the figure and angling the spray upwards. That's a super easy way to add an overhead light source, you're basically creating shadows on the underneath parts. Then I'd do the white with a brush, and probably use a shitty brush that's not loaded up with much paint and hit the fur surfaces. That would essentially give you a bit of the light blue as shadow deeper down in the fur's texture. If you didn't like it, it'd be a simpler matter to just go ahead and make it a solid white afterward.

I'd do the eyes and mouth last, and probably try to go a little goofier with those than you went here, to give him a little more personality. I'd just fill a big sheet of paper with a ton of variations and then pick and choose an eyes and mouth I thought worked well. Also, though I'm okay with the black pupils, I think a darker blue outline around the white of the eye would be softer, and the same crit for the black of the mouth, nipples, and bellybutton. Black's a harsh color, especially on a piece that's mostly light blue and white. It really jumps out at you.
