Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

Here is my first custom. It is also the first artist thing I have done since grade school (I am now 33). This was a big lesson piece for me as I had many issues and never done something like this before let alone paint. I learned acrylic come in trasparent, translucent, and opaque which led to me painting on layers too thick. I either should have sanded it before applying primer or no primer at all because I know that the paint will come up along with the primer. If I rotate the head I see that the paint/primer will come up from the neck. I learned that tape mask should not stay on for more than a couple hours at most as it will not let go of the paint (it will help clean the figure so you can start over). I learned I like brush on varnish over spray varnish. I like paint pens more than a brush ( I have shakey hands and gave up photography because of that). I could have probably taken these lessons, stripped it down and started over, but I wanted to force myself to finish it. Later, when I get more experience I will make another one as a way to gauge how much I have improved.

Yes, I understand posting this here isn't the same as posting it on the KR forums (I did that as well). I need the more honest review because I want to know what worked and how to improve on what didn't for future pieces.

Time to plan out another creation.

I think that last picture really shows that you captured the essence of the character really well. I think the lines could be a bit cleaner, but that will just come with more practice.

Good work :D

yeah what hypno said ....he looks good and fits well with all the other characters ...find a better tape to use if you want to go the tape route ...or just practice practice practice trying lines free hand and you will someday get the hang of it ...i never did free hand lines myself when i started but not ive been doing most of my work freehand ....on a side note i love the blue side of this little guy

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town.

Thanks for the feedback. My lines do need practicing. I did enjoy the challenge this brought.

Interesting character, I'd never heard of it before. For a first custom it is good, like previously said with more practice your work will improve.

Thanks again for the feedback. I am starting up my next custom tomorrow. I am going to try a dunny version of the Space Kook from Scooby-Doo.
