Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

Looking for feedback, no sugar coating required. Posted to the KR forum when I initially finished, but didn't get much critical response. These are my first few attempts at customs, based on two 4" Munnys. Nothing goes to waste, got 3 out of the materials.

Sorry about the photo quality on some of these, I didn't have a backdrop at the time and a few were taken with a phone. Subsequent photos are better -- I should probably re-photograph these.

First attempt, Rabbid Squabbit. Had an idea, failed to execute it well. Big learning project. Actually, I'm not even going to show this one as I can identify too many problems on my own.

Second attempt: Munny Tree. I used the head that I had removed from the first custom above.

Decided to make a custom name Munny name tag to go with the tree theme as well.

Third custom: Donna Anna's Song of Cruel Cruel Vengence.

I do have another custom (barely) started. But I ended up getting sidetracked by too many ideas for trying some of my own from scratch. I will post some of those in a separate topic.

wow i dont know really what to pick out on these two! i love them both! i think the only bad thing i would say is the eyes on the tree head munny are a little 'off' for me ...they dont seem to fit the face or look a little rushed in the sorts ...other than the eyes i love the look of that custom and its very creative! the second custom is just so simple yet detailed! i love the sculpt and paint work on him with the cartoony effect ....the only thing is that i wish something was holding or hitting him with the bad instead of it just floating on the back of his head ya know? like another munny that jumped up in the air and just slammed him lol

I really like the first one, I think I'd like to see a little more distress on the head. Maybe some weathering or some decay. I think it would go a long way to match the scene.

As for the second one, not really much wrong with it. I was thinking maybe a bit more detail on the suit, or maybe a bit less detail on the eyes. My thinking is that there is a ton of detail on the eyes down to the vasculature, but the rest of the figure doesn't seem to have as much detail. Maybe a bit more shadowing?

The first piece is a very original idea. The sculpt is cool and the vulture looks real good. I do agree on the eyes but that being said it was only your second attempt and first completed piece so overall I would say for a small area of the work being slightly off it is hugely successful. And the custom tag is sweet.

I agree with Hypno on the second piece as well. The head with the contrast of the detailed eyes and solid green background works really well but then you get to the suit and expect a little more detail. Again it is an amazing piece and I almost feel bad making criticisms but since it will only help you out I guess it can't hurt.

What technique do you use for making your lines as with the suit? They are really uniform and straight.

They eyes on the first one are closed eyelids. There are eyelashes on the bottom, but the poor photos might not show that well. Same goes for the little bit of distressing around the points of entry/exit of the tree through the head.

On the second, I thought that maybe I went overboard with the blending, etc. on the previous one, so I tried sticking with more blocked out, solid colors. But as you've all pointed out -- and I questioned this too -- some of it does look a bit plain. I added a highlight to the buttons on the coat because they would be a "glossy" material, but wasn't sure if doing the same to the coat would make it look less of a soft material. What I really wanted to do was pinstripes, but I wasn't feeling up to the task... yet. I think the ears look unfinished too.

As to how I did the lines on the suit, I painted it all back first, then painted the dark grey second, so rather than painting those black lines, they are what remained of the black undercoat.

Thanks for the comments!

Very cool. I will try that approach when I need to.

And your work looks great. Hope to see more soon.
